Summer Special: A Refreshing Display Font for Small Business Branding

Updating Our Café Menu with a New Look

As a café owner, I’m always looking for small but impactful ways to refresh our brand. Recently, we decided to update our summer menu and wanted something that felt light, inviting, and a little playful. That’s when I came across Summer Special—a display font that immediately caught my eye with its soft curves and relaxed vibe. I decided to test it out on our new seasonal menu, and the results were surprisingly effective.

Summer Special is a cute, casual display font that feels like a warm breeze on a summer afternoon. Its rounded edges and open spacing give it a friendly, approachable look. It’s not meant for long paragraphs or body text—this is a font that shines when used for headlines, short phrases, or standout design elements. It has a hand-crafted feel without looking messy or unprofessional. That makes it perfect for small businesses looking to add personality without sacrificing polish.

How Typography Impacts Brand Perception

Typography often gets overlooked in small business branding, but it plays a huge role in how customers perceive your brand. A clean, consistent typeface builds trust and professionalism. Summer Special, while playful, still feels intentional and well-designed. When we used it for our menu headers, it gave the whole document a more cohesive and elevated look. Customers have started commenting on how “fresh” and “inviting” our menu feels now—proof that a font can influence the way people experience your brand.

It’s important to remember that fonts aren’t just about aesthetics—they affect readability, first impressions, and even how memorable your brand is. Summer Special walks the line beautifully between expressive and legible. We used it at a slightly larger size on our menu cards and found it remained crisp and clear, even when printed on textured paper.

Real-World Uses for Summer Special

We’ve since expanded our use of Summer Special beyond the menu. Here are a few of the ways we’ve incorporated it into our branding materials:

Best Uses and Readability Tips

While Summer Special is incredibly versatile, it’s best suited for display use. Think logos, headlines, packaging titles, and decorative accents rather than long-form text. It works especially well when you want to convey a sense of joy, ease, or creativity.

If you’re using it for small labels or mobile screens, I recommend testing it at different sizes to ensure legibility. We found that at 10pt or smaller, some of the finer details start to blur, especially in print. But at 12pt and above, it holds up beautifully. For digital use, it’s crisp and clean on both desktop and mobile views, making it a solid choice for online shop banners or social media graphics.

Pairing Summer Special with Other Fonts

One of the best things about using a distinctive font like Summer Special is how it pairs with more neutral typefaces. We paired it with a clean sans serif for body text on our menu, which helped balance the playful headline without overwhelming the design. For more elegant branding elements, like thank-you cards or gift tags, we used a soft script font that complements Summer Special’s curves without competing with it.

Here are a few simple font pairing ideas:

  1. With a Sans Serif: Use Summer Special for headlines and a modern sans serif like Montserrat or Lato for supporting text.
  2. With a Serif: Pair Summer Special with a light serif like Playfair Display for a refined yet approachable look.
  3. With a Handwritten Font: For a more personal touch, combine it with a cursive or script font in smaller accents like “Handmade with Love” or “Limited Edition” tags.

What to Check Before Using Summer Special

Before incorporating any font into business materials, it’s important to review the licensing and technical specs. Summer Special is a display font that typically comes with multiple styles, including ligatures and alternates that add character to your design. Make sure it includes web and print licensing if you plan to use it on your website, packaging, or product labels.

We also recommend checking for multilingual support if your brand communicates in more than one language. While Summer Special is primarily designed for English and common Latin characters, it’s always good to verify before using it for international audiences.
